2004 Advancing Women at Virginia Tech Workshop Highlights

On Monday, January 12, 2004, the AdvanceVT program held its inaugural workshop at the Hotel Roanoke. AdvanceVT leadership introduced the program to the Virginia Tech community and solicited input on a variety of topics related to the recruitment, retention, and advancement of women faculty. Dr. Joseph Bordogna, Deputy Director of the National Science Foundation, was the keynote speaker. Other speakers included Alice Hogan, ADVANCE Program Director at the National Science Foundation, and leaders of initiatives to address women's issues at other universities. Dr. Karen DePauw, Vice Provost for Graduate Studies and Dean of the Graduate School at Virginia Tech, delivered the closing keynote.

The morning program consisted of presentations about ADVANCE and efforts to increase the participation of women in academe. In the afternoon, participants broke off into small groups to discuss issues related to the advancement of women in science and engineering at Virginia Tech. While the AdvanceVT program is focused on women in science and engineering, many of the issues raised are relevant for both women and men in all parts of the university.
