Issues for Department Heads

 

QUESTION: What challenges do department chairs face in supporting the advancement of women at Virginia Tech?

  1. Faculty buy-in for gender diverse faculty. Getting faculty to realize the importance of having a diverse faculty; that it is an advantage, not a disadvantage, it strengthens the pool.
  2. Family leave/Life transition policies. Creating family-friendly policies. Clarification for department heads about how they have been used. Removing stigma about using them.
  3. Resources at the departmental level for buy-out, raises, space, grad student resources to give the department head the flexibility to achieve the goals. Creating opportunity for women to participate in ADVANCE through buy-outs.
  4. New faculty issues. Clearly documenting policies and creating an environment where new faculty, men and women, can fully participate without being over-extended.
  5. Dual career. Systematic procedures and policies about dual career hiring and resources to support referrals.
  6. Department head training. Professional development opportunities for department heads about what has proven effective in promoting a change in departmental culture. Basic training about policies, like about the stop the clock and dual career hiring.
