Issues for Graduate Students

 

QUESTION: What special challenges do women graduate students in science and engineering face at Virginia Tech?

  1. Women under more pressure to respond to family emergencies. Women are at a competitive disadvantage; cultural expectations influence this. Managing personal and professional lives within traditional expectations given the lack of institutional flexibility.
  2. Limited number of role models among students and faculty (gender and culture).
  3. Lack of professional development programs for graduate students. The delta between men and women relates to networking differences.
  4. Mentoring and feedback / Evaluation insufficient.
  5. Dual-career issues -- No visibility for this issue.
  6. Lack of childcare facilities.
