QUESTION:
What challenges do women face in becoming administrative and technical
leaders at Virginia Tech?
1. Women not being
considered seriously; not being groomed.
- conscious and unconscious
2. Administrative
roles are not rewarded/recognized/$ compensation
- Being able to negotiate
proper compensation for responsibilities -- discouraging women from
negotiating salary
3. Balancing work/family
as an administrator
- Expectation to
do both scholarship/administration -- when do you decide how to do which
one? Taking on too much is difficult. How to negotiate ability to keep
research program and balance administrative responsibilities, effects
on promotion?
- Tradition/expectation
for moving up to give up research/scholarship -- post docs to keep up
scholarship while doing administrative work; course buyout to help women
leaders balance responsibilities.
- Negotiation difficulty
-- balancing administrative expectations with women's goals
4. Path and criteria
for administrative positions not clear.
- Lack of access
to behavioral routines
- Men's perception
of women -- do men fear having professional relationship with women?
Insecurity, new relationship. Can't be themselves around women leaders.
5. Why bother (lack
of efficacy)?
- Is there lack of
aspiration/desire for women to pursue leadership roles?
- Element of male
networking that might deter that
- Would be easier
to get women into administrator roles if there were real and tangible
efforts to recruit women and compensation/reward.
